Biking Around Sicily - Two Wheels to See It All

It's easy to get lost in the laidback, leisurely pace of Sicily. Villas by the sea make for lazy days at the beach, while acres of orange and olive groves call for relaxed, unhurried picnics, punctuated by naps under shady trees. Even the narrow streets of the villages call for lazy strolls punctuated by stops at cafes and street carts; it's a far cry from the brisk tempos of the cities of Europe.

If the undemanding rhythm of this island is a little too slow for you, don't worry, there's another option: bike around Sicily! Villas in the southeastern region make for a great starting point for touring the area by bicycle. Biking is a great way to see the attractions up close, but go just a little faster than walking. And it's great way to keep up your heart rate as well - if it hasn't been raised by the amazing sights already!

Here are a few of the best routes.

Val Di Noto

Cycle from the seaside and past orange and lemon tree groves, breathing in the fresh air to see some of the most amazing UNESCO-listed baroque towns of Sicily. Villas around the coastline of Donnalucata make a great starting point for this route; the steep hills and valleys lead to many amazing attractions.

First stop is Scicli, where you can marvel at the cave dwellings on the slopes around the town's main church, San Matteo. Cycle on to the town centre, Piazza Italia, and explore the palaces, particularly Palazzo Beneventano, its grandest, most showy structure. Modica will require ascending up some steep slopes, but its intricate duomos and picturesque views are well worth it. Ragusa, particularly the upper town Ragusa Ibia, will also require uphill riding; however, we guarantee that the breathtaking sights and classic views along the meandering roads are well worth the effort.

Around Mount Etna

The iconic volcano is a must see when visiting Sicily. Villas around Catania's rolling hills or spectacular Taormina make for a super starting point for a bike tour, and visits to the bustling markets will definitely make for unforgettable memories. Along the way, take the opportunity to partake in some traditional Sicilian cuisine, including wonderful seafood like grilled swordfish and snapper cipollata, or to sample local produce like the meats and cheeses of Etna and Nebrodi. For those of athletic ability, take your bicycle path through lava and ashes to explore volcanic rock, lush forests, and amazing volcanic landscapes.

Caltagirone

Caltagirone, also in the province of Catania, is a masterpiece of the ancient craftsmen of the island. Buildings in the town are decorated with delicately painted ceramic tiles and pottery, but nothing compares to 142 tiled stairs you must descend on foot after you have pedalled along the charming country route lined with orchards and windmills. Visit the local artisans and bring back a souvenir or two, then relax and try out the local bounty at a nearby agroturismo - this is definitely an experience to nourish body and soul.

These are just a few of the many wonderful tours you can do on two wheels around this spectacular Italian island.
