It is increasingly the star our summers. Indeed, we are told on all sides that the French - who would watch their wallets a vaguely anxious on the eve of the holiday - are more than ever inclined to turn to camping.
Plus it's eco-friendly, positive, healthy ... In short trend. Remains well equipped, so choosing the tent "that goes well." Not easy initially because the ideal tent - light, airy, waterproof but breathable, small but solid ... could be extended to an infinite list! - Remains to be invented. However, some simple criteria can make the right choice.
What use?
Each event requires specific characteristics. Hiking, weight is critical. In the mountains, also the weight will be preferred, but the low wind. Also keep in mind that over a tent is smaller, it is easier to heat. Planting sardines is often difficult in the sand, a freestanding structure (dome type see below) is preferable. Climate also has a say. Tropical, openings with or without nets can be synonymous with well-earned rest or ... sleepless night. Good ventilation is important in warmer climates and a double roof is effective to focus in rainy climates, even if the weight of the whole must suffer. One generally distinguishes three main types of tents: the "summer" (sluggish in temperate use), the "three seasons" (most versatile) and the "four seasons" (difficult or extreme conditions)
What structure?
Forget the ancient "Canadian." The tents are now available in two main types: "domes" and "tunnels". The former have a generally round shape and are mounted through hoops which cross at their top. They support the whole and make it "freestanding". The "tents tunnels" have a shape close to the triangle and fit through the side arches. They are less spacious than the domes but it is in this category that we find the lighter models.
Frequency of use?
The quality and robustness expected depend on the answer to this question. For a summer use, almost all models can do the trick. For more frequent use, it is wise to take care to check the quality of finishes - including zippers - and the technical material: polyester is stronger than nylon, and treatments sealing silicone are generally more durable than those made of polyurethane. Prefer hoops aluminum alloys, which are lighter than the glass fiber.
A few tips .
- Check the vents - check the quality of closures
- consider the presence or absence of lateral locations (the "apses") that keep out, but dry, bags and shoes, and thus save space inside
- train you to pitch your tent at least once before departure
- Always store your tent after submitting dry
